Inspiration
Bani Thani, born Vishnupriya, was a talented singer and poet in the court of King Sawant Singh of Kishangarh (1748–1764). The king fell in love with her talent and beauty and their love bloomed due to a shared interest in singing, poetry and devotion for Krishna. Their love became legendary and inspired much of the evocative and romantic paintings for which Kishangarh is justly famous. She came to be known as 'Bani Thani', which means "a well-dressed lady", because of the exquisite jewellery and makeup she used to adorn herself with after becoming queen. In this exquisite Rajasthani-style wooden painting, Bani Thani, with her characteristic almond-shaped eyes, arched eyebrows, and delicate features, is depicted holding a lotus, symbolizing purity and divine elegance, that her love, King Sawant Singh has given her. Her delicate features and enigmatic expression are beautifully rendered, capturing her timeless allure. Accompanying her is a gentle deer, symbolizing serenity, and adding a harmonious touch to the scene. The lush leaves of a banana tree frame the composition, infusing it with a sense of natural vitality. Encasing this serene tableau is an intricately designed wooden lattice, enhancing the painting with its intricate patterns and traditional craftsmanship. This artwork seamlessly blends the sublime beauty of Bani Thani with elements of nature, all framed by a masterpiece of Rajasthani artistry.
