Inspiration

Raja Sawant Singh was the king of  Kishangarh (1748–1764). He fell deeply in love with Vishnupriya (later known as Bani Thani) a talented poet and singer in his court. He was an accomplished poet and a devotee of lord Krishna and their bond has often been compared to the love of Radha-Krishna. Their love became legendary and inspired much of the evocative and romantic paintings for which Kishangarh is justly famous. In this exquisite Rajasthani-style wooden painting, King Sawant Singh of Kishangarh is depicted holding a lotus, symbolizing purity and divine elegance, which he is extending towards his love, Vishnupriya. His regal presence is accentuated by traditional royal attire, exuding authority and grace.  Accompanying him is a gentle deer, symbolizing serenity, and adding a harmonious touch to the scene.  The lush leaves of a banana tree frame the composition, infusing it with a sense of natural vitality.  Encasing this serene tableau is an intricately designed wooden lattice, enhancing the painting with its intricate patterns and traditional craftsmanship. This artwork seamlessly blends the noble stature of King Sawant Singh with elements of nature, all framed by a masterpiece of Rajasthani artistry.
